Spiritual Spa Blogs

As the founder of the Spiritual Spa, I’m really into the quest for whole life health – not just physical health –but the whole gamut of body, soul and spirit health.  I love learning about it, hearing about it, and trying new things that help us all get healthier.  I’m not alone in this.  Most people I know are interested in, if not obsessed with, health and wellness in some form.  At the top of our radar screens are the Biggest Loser, Dr. Oz, Massage Envy, Healthcare Reform, and Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.  Most of us rush to add or delete the food or supplement most recently proven to enhance or harm our health.  We have personal trainers and plastic surgeons who chisel our bodies.  For our souls, we have a psychotherapist on-call or a pharmaceutical to keep us on an even keel.  And, for our spirits, we have mega-churches, spiritual directors and gurus to help us get saved, hear God, be good or find nirvana.

OK, now I’m going to sound more cynical that I really am, but go along with me for a moment, while I say, “So, what?”.  If we sit down and are completely honest about it, why do we spend our time, money and attention on adding or cutting out a substance, on analyzing our life with a therapist, or on meditating daily?  What’s our motive for all of this?  Is it to live longer, look better, or feel better?  To get someone to love us, to be more moral, or to find peace?  How successful have we been at reaching our goal?  If and when we reach the goal, is our life really any better?  Let’s say for a moment that we actually lose 10 pounds, our doctor congratulates us on great medical numbers, and we have a peaceful day or two.  So what?
